The race to the finish is on and it looks liks 2013 will become a clash of two filmmaking legends - Steven Spielberg (“Lincoln”) and Ang Lee (“Life Of Pi”). Both Lee and Spielberg’s movies have been nominated for 11 and 12 categories awards, respectively and we are mincing no words by hoping that Lee takes home the bald, naked, gold men.

Besides having a strong India connection, both the movies fared extremely well at the box office in 2012. “Lincoln” is one of the first major picture productions of the new Reliance Entertainment and Dreamworks co-collaboration, three years after the two entertainment houses announced a tie-up. “Life Of Pi,” that is based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel, is based in India. Mumbai-based Carnatic classical singer Bombay Jayashri has been nominated for Best Original Song for her composition of Pi’s Lullaby that features in the opening credits of the movie. Although, we guess that Adele will probably take this one with her song theme song for the Bond movie, “Skyfall.”

Besides the two biggies, Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow’s sophomore attempt, “Zero Dark Thirty” has also been nominated in five categories, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Jessica Chastain, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing. The film is expected to release in March 2013 in India and it’s India connect is that it has been shot extensively in Chandigarh. Other notable mentions include “Les miserables,” “Argo,” “Skyfall,” “Django Unchained,” and “The Master.” The most anticipated movie of the year, however, “The Dark Knight Rises” got a major Oscar snub. The only superhero movie that did get a nomination is “Marvel’s The Avengers” with its lone nomination for Best Visual Effects.

Watch the nominations ceremony with actors Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone making the announcements.
