YouTube India’s Most Watched Videos Of 2012

You can tell a lot about a nation’s social quotient, judging by its choice of popular entertainment. In that case, we the Indians are a nation of women-degrading misogynists in love with item numbers, Sunny Leone and Punjabi gangsta’ rap that trivialises the “modern woman” (à la Honey Singh), are addicted to bad, house-wife brainwashing saas-bahu TV soaps, are God-fearing enough to watch Hindu mythology, lent some respect for Olympian Mary Kom, adore Salman Khan and paid adulation to Yash Chopra and strangely enough watch a lot of crime drama on Hindi GECs.

This is what the annual survey of the year’s most watched videos on YouTube in India would have us believe. Technicians at the popular video-sharing website made a roundup of the top trending YouTube videos, most subscribed channels, most watched songs, most watched TV shows and most watched movies trailers of 2012. Their survey tools consisted of number of views, viewer engagement in terms of shares and comments, and fan-content of remixes and parodies of songs and shows.

According to the survey on Indian viewership, Indians are all either house-wives who have discovered the power of online streaming if they are denied television space or 20-something “Delhi guys” who spent hours adulating the controversial Punjabi rapper Honey Singh. We have been forced to come to this conclusion, judging by the fact that the survey does not describe the demographics.

YouTube India’s most trending video and most watched song of 2012 is Honey Singh’s Brown Rang, with nine million views. The most watched TV show in 2012 is Ram Kapoor’s “Bade Acche Lagte Hain.” T-Series is the most subscribed to channel in 2012. The trailer of Yash Chopra’s last directorial release “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” is the most watched movie trailer of 2012.

The global YouTube sensation of 2012 “Gangnam Style” finds itself a second place after Honey Singh in the most trending video category. A lot of people watched the Olympics re-runs and auditions of “MTV Roadies” as well. (there is something very wrong with this sentence). The only regional addition to the list is the YouTube channel of TeluguOne that is the sixth most subscribed to channel.
