It is the same every year. Each year, the biggest gig in fashion in Mumbai, the Lakme Fashion Week brings together all kinds of people -right from the editors and stylists, to buyers and celebrities. Bollywood stars are the highest in rank, and we see them in excess at fashion week, adorning the front rows or showing loyalties towards their designer friends by walking the ramp for them. The recently concluded fashion week this year was no exception, with ample movie star sightings. With designer names like Manish Malhotra, Vikram Phadnis and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, we expected to see their regular clientele strutting their stuff at the venue, ranging from the Kapoor sisters to the Shetty sisters. We usually keep an eye out for what celebrities wear and if they feel the pressure then, fashion week only increases that pressure exponentially. The constant glare of the discerning critic’s scrutiny s always on them, from their makeup to their Choos. While some appear immaculately dressed, few are simply forgettable. We give you glaring and glowing examples of both from this year.
- Karisma Kapoor
Karisma looked stunning in a white and red Anarkali she wore for the Manish Malhotra show. With red and gold embroidery along the neck, the dress was breezy, and paired with gold sandals and clutch.
- Kajol
Kajol always makes a stunning appearance at every fashion week, whether it’s walking the ramp or off it. Her first appearance, this year, was again at the Manish Malhotra show where she was dressed in a black lehenga with gold accents designed by him. The lehenga was not her best fashion decision, but she more than made up for it in her next appearance. Dressed in a powder-blue Shehla Khan sari, paired with a pastel pink blouse, Kajol looked simple, yet pretty.
- Lara Dutta
Having shed some of that baby weight, Lara looked understated in a black dress with see-through panels, complete with minimal make-up and non-fussy straight hair.
- Jacqueline Fernandes
While we saw Jacqueline walk the ramp for Shehla, she was also spotted off the ramp attending the Manish Malhotra show wearing one of his creations. She wore a vermillion lehenga that wasn’t very flattering, but the fiery color was a saving grace. Did Manish pull a Sabya a la Cannes?
- Kareena Kapoor Khan
This diva was dressed immaculately in a lovely pale-lime green coloured gown by Osman Yousefzada. With her hair pulled back into a sleek do and kohl rimmed eyes, Kareena looked very stylish as she cheered her sister walking the ramp for Vikram Phadnis.
- Malaika Arora Khan
Whoever said money cannot buy style, must be referring to Malaika Arora Khan here. The otherwise well-dressed Malaika, looked forgettable in a white shirt paired with textured green shorts. She accessorized this look with a white chunky Govinda-esque belt, a gold box clutch and gold pumps by Louboutin, which too could not salvage this disaster. The whole attire was loud and albeit tasteless. Maybe the item girl in her chose this outfit.
- Amrita Arora
Amrita Arora made her first appearance in a black peplum top paired with black pants while she posed for the media with Kajol by her side. The hint of gold in her accessories complimented the casual look well. She also accompanied her sister and best friend Kareena at the Vikram Phadnis show wearing a simple little black dress. She wore with this a pair of black pumps and a hot pink clutch. Not noteworthy, but not bad.
- Shilpa Shetty
The new mommy with her sister in tow, showed off her enviable figure in a black dress that hugged her curves. With just a hint of sequins sprinkled across the shoulder and the back, it was a far cry from the animal printed Shilpa Shetty we are used to seeing. Accessorized with a bottle green clutch and black pumps, her look was simple and showed some amount of restraint on her part. Shilpa also lent support to designer and friend Rocky S whose show she attended wearing a dress by Missoni. The geometric touch and vivacious colours are a Missoni trademark, but the choice of dress was too casual for Fashion Week.
- Shamita Shetty
While her sister was a sight in all black, Shamita Shelty chose a white dress with a hint of sparkle at the shoulders and the waist. While the dress was okay, she accessorized it well with a Bottega Veneta intrecciato clutch and snake skin pumps that complimented the clutch well.
- GulPanag
Absent from the limelight otherwise, Gul Panag was spotted at fashion week on two instances. Both times, she looked like she was in desperate need of a stylist and I almost offered her help to save my eyes the horror. She was spotted wearing a cobalt blue jumpsuit that would have been tolerable if it wasn’t for the boob spill from the sides. Nothing wrong with being curvy, but nothing wrong with wearing the right size either! Sans accessories, she completed her look with a studded clutch that did nothing to flatter the unflattering outfit. If you thought this was bad, her other appearance was cringe-worthy. She was seen posing for shutterbugs wearing denim cut-offs paired with a white shirt. While one usually never goes wrong with a classic white shirt, she managed just fine. She wore with this brown boots, channeling cowgirl circa “I wasn’t born then.”
- Zarine Khan
I understand the quizzical look on your face. She is one of the Katrina look-alike who hasn’t cracked it in Bollywood yet. Zarine Khan showed up on two days, looking passable on both occasions. The first time she was seen wearing a black full-sleeved top with embroidered cuffs, paired with a nude skirt and nude peep toes. Very Jasmine gone wrong. Wait, did she not play Jasmine in some movie? Talk about getting into the character. The second time around, she wore a white vest with a burgundy leather skirt, complete with the same nude pumps I’m guessing. The look would have been okay, if it weren’t for that mismatched statement necklace she wore. I am convinced the Aunty next door is looking for it.
- Genelia Dsouza
Genelia looked pretty in a little black dress with a white collar and cuff. The outfit was simple, yet classy. She carried a pink Jimmy Choo acrylic clutch that added a pop of color to the monochrome outfit. The shoes could have been more dramatic given this simplicity of the dress, and so could the make up which made her look disheveled. She played it safe, but that never got anyone brownie points now, did it?
- Shibani Dandekar
Anusha Dandekar’s sister was spotted at fashion week attending the Sailex show, wearing a Sailex creation. With a crop top and matching high-wasted shorts, her outfit was trendy. She paired this with nude pumps which was a mistake given the pale outfit and her choice of yellow nails was a faux pas waiting to be addressed.
- Sana Saeed
The kid from “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” who recently appeared in “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa” wore a rather hideous outfit. With too much makeup complimenting her all white look, the actress looked like a tramp who does not belong on the ramp. She wore a white cropped tee over a white lace skirt, both as hideous separately as they were together. She accessorized this with a pink box clutch and pink stripy sandals. The whole look screamed Barbie turned skank.
- Urmila Matondkar
The petite actress took a break from cooling her heels to attend fashion week this season. She walked the ramp for friend Manish Malhotra and was also spotted off ramp wearing a lace strapless dress in a deep hue of blue. With a Chanel clutch and diamond drop earrings to go with, the look was amateur and apt for a person in her early Twenties. Come age or wrinkles, the heart is still “Rangeela” I suppose. While the women mostly failed to impress, the men were more attuned to trends this fashion week looking good, barring a few who made our day!
- Shehnaz Treasureywala
Giving company to this ex VJ and “Delhi Belly” actress this fashion week was her poor sense of style. On one occasion, she was spotted wearing a green printed crop top paired over a matching skirt. The print was loud and gaudy and not even the Angelina-esque thigh high slit could do anything to make it better. On a different day that was definitely not the same as above, she was spotted wearing a leopard print dress. We know Roberto Cavalli loves animal prints, but do you have to love it too? Well, I guess the saying “any publicity is good publicity” stands true.
- Nawazuddin Siddiqui
“The Gangs Of Wasseypur” star looked quite dapper in his crisp black suit and a tangerine bow tie to go with his matching pocket square.
- Rahul Khanna
The GQ man, true to his reputation, looked drool-worthy in a grey Nehru jacket over a white shirt, paired with black trousers. Look and learn boys. Simplicity is always the key.
- Kunal Kapoor
Dressed in a red blazer over a blue shirt and denims, Kunal could have opted for a better blazer to compliment this look. Red blazer is gay man territory so leave it to this uber stylish community to make this look work.
Of course it is difficult to keep a track of what these celebs wear each day, for different shows, but we have tried to give you the best of the worst. Money can’t buy you style or class, but it can buy you a good stylist. So maybe it’s time you invested in a stylist rather than in that hideous outfit, because honey that what you’ve got on there, is unflattering.
