Having a band and playing your song may not be the stuff made of the alternative dreams after all. The televised jam show, Coke Studio @ MTV in its Season 3 to be produced and televised this year will audition upcoming bands to fight for a chance to appear on the new season. The contest will be held all across in May in Blue Frog, Delhi and Mumbai.
In the second season, Coke Studio @ MTV broke away from the Bollywood mould of it’s first season to feature established artists like Karsh Kale as well as underground folk musicians like Hari & Sukhmani. For the third season, MTV is inviting bands to send in their original compositions and a rendition of an original folk song to in audio/video/online links. Of the entries sent in the top 24 bands will be called to perform at Blue Frog, Mumbai and Delhi where one lucky band will be flown to Mumbai to shoot for their own one-hour episode.
Channel head Aditya Swamy says the contest will give MTV a window into the growing indie scene in the country, “As we curate the show, we are always looking to present artists that are below the collective conscience.”
Blue Frog will be employing their Early Set programming slots for running the month-long contest. “The Early Set at blueFROG was the first step in that direction, and saw the birth of several new bands that have gone on to perform on big stages at festivals around the world. leapFROG To CokeStudio @ MTV goes several steps further: it will discover new talent and create opportunities for budding musicians,” says Simran Mulchandani, MD, Blue Frog.
