Chennai will play host to the second edition of the IndiEarth XChange - a series of conferences, workshops, showcase performances, screenings and think tank sessions between the Indian independent music, film and media industries, and key national and international delegates from developed and developing markets. The conference acts as a meeting point for established and emerging members of India’s music and film industries, and also includes a music and film festival with an eclectic line up of renowned national and international artists showcasing their work.
Global XChange for Music, Film & Media
XChange is India’s trade event for independent music, film and media, and provides a professional platform where industry epresentatives, venue owners, media, labels, musicians and independent filmmakers can network, discuss, attend workshops, and experience performances and screenings by independent artists. The aim is to create networks between Indian and international industry members and build business relationships that nurture culture and the arts.
The conference sessions, which will run through the day, will focus upon topics relevant to the music, film and media industries by experts from these fields. Workshops will also be conducted by specialists from the music and film industries - Border Movement in collaboration with IndiEarth (supported by the Goethe Institute) will host Soundlabs – a workshop on Digital Music Production and Production Skills; Michael Bierylo (Berklee College of Music) will host a workshop on Live Performance Techniques for Electronic
Musicians; legendary guitarist Prasanna (Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music) will conduct a workshop on ‘connecting with your listener’; Arturo Calvete (UK) - senior editor of projects like 1 Giant Leap and Laya Project - will conduct a film workshop on tips for editors, on creating stories from raw footage.
The focus of the conference will be on independent artists and media from India, the Indian Ocean region, and Asia. The music line up will include both renowned and up and coming musicians from around India and the globe. Musicians performing this year will include Berlin based producer Robot Koch (DE); Brooklyn based songwriter/ producer/ visual artist J.Viewz; indie/electronica duo Shaair and Func (IN); Success and French Cowboy & The One from France; indie alt-rockers Skrat (IN) and Sky Rabbit (IN)world music/electronica collective Business Class Refugees (IL); Tritonik (MU) with their signature style of Mauritian blues; Carnatic maestro Mahesh Vinayakram (IN); DJ/producer Nucleya (IN) – to name just a few.
Sahel Calling (DE / USA) - a film about the refugee population in Mali and the Sahel; A Dream Takes Wings (IN) - a rare film sourced from the archives, documenting the evolution of Indian cinema; Dead Cat - a quirky tale of love set in London; and the poetically depicted Tasher Desh (IN) are just some of the offbeat independent films that will be screened at the festival. A few of the directors slated to be at the festival include Sudhir Mishra (IN), Gitanjali Rao (IN), Hemant Gaba (IN), Jaideep Varma (IN), and Arturo Calvete (UK).
The aim of the conference – which has partnered with bodies like IOMMA, Region Centre, Insitut Francaise, and Creative India, also in association with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) - is to provide sustainable models of industry development and infrastructure – a global collective that can jointly build foundational multi-country networks.
The event will be attended by and covered by key international, national, and local media, and is slated to feature in world press as well as industry publications such as Soundbox – the conference’s magazine partner. XChange’s radio partner this year is Chennai Live 104.8 FM. This edition of XChange brings together an estimated 180 delegates from 20 countries, for 3 days of non-stop exchanges of music, film, art and idea.
